A Painful Condition Affecting Muscles

Muscle pain is one of the most common forms of pain to have. Myofascial pain syndrome is a type of chronic pain where pressure  in your muscles cause pain in unrelated parts of your body. Our board-certified pain management doctors can accurately diagnose if myofascial pain syndrome is the source of your muscle pain and help you get relief through non-surgical treatments. We aim for pain relief, not just pain management.

It is more common for women and those with sedentary lifestyles between the ages of 20-40 to develop MPS. Myofascial pain syndrome can develop from the following conditions:

  • Musculoskeletal tissue damage
  • Herniated discs
  • Heavy lifting
  • Overuse of unconditioned muscles
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Severe medical conditions- heart attack, gall bladder problems or stomach irritation
  • Prolonged exposure to cold
  • Hormonal changes

Treatment of myofascial pain can be dependent on a patient’s level of health or severity of injury. Comprehensive treatment plans for MPS include:

  • Dry Needling – A therapeutic treatment using a firm but small needle inserted into muscular trigger points to elicit a twitch response out of the muscle area allowing healing in the affected area.
  • Pressure Release Therapy – Works to reduce scar tissue from an injury by relaxing the muscles, increase blood circulation and decrease friction and pressure. Done by protocol of applying pressure to affected areas and specific elongating stretches.
  • Super Pulsed Laser Treatment – A super pulsed laser delivers pulses at billionths of a second, producing a high-energy density that is absorbed deep into the tissue, expediting pain relief.

In some chronic cases of myofascial pain, combinations of physical therapy, trigger point injections and massage are needed. In certain cases, medication is used to treat MPS.

If diagnosed and treated properly, the outlook for people with myofascial pain and trigger points is good. Call us today for your free consultation. (337) 477-2876.
